However, the term “plant-made” needs some context. The source of a material and its compostability are two different things.

A compostable pouch uses a packaging structure designed to break down through composting under defined conditions. Depending on the material, some components can be derived from renewable or plant-based sources.

The important part is the complete pouch structure, not just one plant-based film. The films, sealing layers, adhesives, inks and other components need to be considered when evaluating the finished packaging.

FACT : IS/ISO 17088:2021 evaluates compostable plastics for disintegration, aerobic biodegradation, effects on compost and control of constituents. It is intended for organic recycling through appropriate composting processes.

For Indian packaging, this distinction is particularly important because compostable plastic materials are required to conform to IS/ISO 17088:2021 under the Plastic Waste Management framework.

GOOD TO KNOW : Under India’s current rules, plastic packaging made from compostable plastics must carry the wording “compostable only under industrial composting.”

Where Can Compostable Pouches Be Used?

Compostable pouches can be considered for selected dry foods, snacks, bakery products, seeds and similar applications where the required shelf life and barrier performance can be achieved.

They are not automatically suitable for products with high oil or liquid content or applications requiring extended shelf life. Material performance should always be checked against the product before changing packaging.

For example, Swisspack’s published information notes that compostable materials can have limitations with wet and oily products, particularly for longer shelf-life applications.

PACKAGING NOTE : A sustainable material still needs to provide the right moisture, oxygen, sealing and mechanical protection for the product.

Compostable Pouches vs Conventional Pouches

The main difference is not simply that one pouch is “natural” and the other is “plastic.” It is the material structure, its performance and what happens to it after use.

Conventional flexible packaging can provide strong barrier and shelf-life performance across a wide range of products. Compostable structures are designed with a different end-of-life pathway and therefore need to be selected according to the application.

For brands, the decision should consider product protection, shelf life, material performance and available composting infrastructure together.

What Should Brands Check Before Choosing?

Before ordering plant-based compostable pouches, it is useful to confirm:

What materials are used in the complete pouch?

Is the finished structure tested or certified for compostability?

Is it intended for industrial composting?

What shelf life can the structure support?

Is it suitable for the product’s oil and moisture levels?

Does it meet applicable Indian packaging and food-contact requirements?

India’s rules also require manufacturers of permitted compostable plastic commodities to obtain CPCB certification before marketing or selling them.

Compostable Pouches from Swisspack.co.in

Swisspack.co.in provides flexible packaging solutions for brands looking to explore different material and pouch options, including compostable packaging.

The suitable structure depends on the product, pouch format, filling process and shelf-life requirements. Providing these details helps identify whether a compostable pouch is technically appropriate for the application.

Plant-based packaging can be part of a more considered packaging strategy, but the material should always be selected based on both product performance and its actual end-of-life conditions.

Launching a product is exciting. Building the right packaging
for it, however, can quickly become complicated.

What material should you use? Which printing technology makes
sense for your current volumes? How do you keep minimum order
quantities manageable? What happens when your business grows
and your packaging requirements change? And how do you ensure
your packaging protects the product and delivers the shelf life
            you need?

For many brands, answering these questions means working with
multiple vendors, one for design, another for printing, another
for packaging production, and yet another for filling and sealing
            machinery.

In the early stages, a brand may choose digital printing or
static printing because it allows greater flexibility with
lower quantities. For extremely cost-conscious launches,
stickers can also be an efficient way to get a product into
the market without immediately investing in large quantities
                of printed packaging.

As the business grows and order volumes increase, the
                economics change.

The brand can move towards flexographic printing and,
eventually, rotogravure printing for larger-scale production
where the cost per pouch can become significantly more
                competitive.

                The important part?

You don't have to start over with a new packaging supplier
every time your business grows. Swisspac can support that
                transition with you.

When choosing flexible packaging, the bag's overall dimensions are
only part of the picture. The gusset design also plays an important
role in determining how much product the package can hold, how it
looks after filling and how efficiently it can be stored.

Side gusset bags are designed with folded sections along both sides
that expand as the product is added. This simple construction gives
brands more usable volume while keeping the package relatively
            compact when empty.

                01 — UNDERSTANDING THE GUSSET

What Does the Gusset Actually Do?

The side gusset creates additional space within the bag. As the
package fills, the folded material opens and allows the bag to
expand according to the product volume.

Gusset depth directly influences the available internal
volume, but it should always be considered together
with the bag's width, height and the characteristics of the
                product being packed.

            Key Fact

A larger gusset does not automatically mean a better package.
The dimensions need to match the product, fill weight and
                required finished shape.

                Product Density Matters

Two products with the same weight can occupy very different
amounts of space. Coffee beans, powdered ingredients, grains
and snacks all behave differently when placed inside a
                flexible package.

This is why packaging dimensions are normally determined using
both the required fill weight and the product's physical
characteristics. Choosing a bag based only on weight can result
in insufficient capacity or unnecessary empty space.

Gusset design also affects how the filled bag stands and

For retail products, this matters because the finished shape

                Material and Sealing Considerations

Gusset design cannot be considered separately from the
packaging material. Different laminate structures have
different flexibility and stiffness characteristics, which
can affect how the bag opens and takes shape.

The sealing method is equally important. The bag needs
sufficient sealing area to create a reliable closure without
interfering with the usable internal volume.

Here are five popular printing finishes that can enhance the appearance of custom printed flat bottom pouches and help create a stronger impression for your brand.

        Finish

        01

        Matte Finish

Matte is a favourite for premium food and beverage brands. It creates a smooth, elegant look while reducing glare, making the packaging feel modern and high quality.

        Finish

        02

        Gloss Finish

Gloss printing makes colours appear brighter and more vibrant. It works well for products that need to grab attention quickly, such as snacks, confectionery and flavoured beverages.

        Finish

        03

        Spot UV

Spot UV adds a glossy coating to selected areas like the logo or product name while the rest of the pouch remains matte. This subtle contrast helps important design elements stand out without making the packaging look overly busy.

        Metallic Effects

Metallic finishes give packaging a luxurious appearance and are often used for premium coffee, chocolates, dry fruits and gift packs. They can highlight logos, patterns or specific design features to create a stronger visual impact.

        Soft-Touch Finish

Soft-touch lamination adds a velvety texture that feels different when customers hold the pouch. It creates a premium unboxing experience and is becoming increasingly popular among high-end food and lifestyle brands.

The best finish depends on your product, target audience and brand identity. A packaging supplier can help you choose a combination that not only looks attractive but also performs well during printing, filling and transportation.

One of the biggest reasons behind this shift is the retort pouch.

Although it looks similar to a regular stand-up pouch, a retort pouch is built for a completely different purpose.

Consumers today want food that’s convenient, safe, and easy to store. At the same time, food manufacturers are looking for packaging that reduces transportation costs and improves production efficiency.

Retort pouches help meet both needs.

Because they’re lightweight and supplied flat, they require far less storage space than empty cans or glass containers. Once filled, they’re easier to transport, helping businesses optimise warehouse space and freight costs without compromising product protection.

For consumers, the benefits are equally practical. Retort pouches are lighter to carry, easier to open, and generate less packaging waste after use.

Where are retort pouches commonly used?

Retort packaging has become a trusted solution across the food industry. It’s widely used for products such as ready-to-eat meals, curry gravies, soups, sauces, seafood, cooked rice, baby food, and pet food. Any product that requires heat processing for extended shelf life is a potential application for retort packaging.

As demand for convenience foods continues to grow, retort pouches are becoming an increasingly common choice for both established brands and emerging food businesses.

Choosing the right material matters

A common mistake is assuming that every laminated pouch is suitable for retort processing.

The reality is that the packaging must be designed specifically for the temperatures and pressures used during sterilisation. Factors such as laminate structure, seal strength, and barrier performance all play an important role in protecting the product throughout its shelf life.

Selecting the right material at the beginning helps prevent packaging failures later.

Final Thoughts

Retort pouches have changed the way many food products are packaged. They combine the convenience of flexible packaging with the performance needed for commercial sterilisation, making them suitable for a wide range of shelf-stable food products.

If you’re planning to introduce a new heat-processed product, it’s worth discussing your filling process, sterilisation conditions, and shelf-life expectations with your packaging supplier before selecting the pouch structure. The right packaging choice can improve both product performance and long-term production efficiency.

A leaking spout pouch can create much bigger problems than just product loss. It can lead to customer complaints, damaged shipments, product recalls, and unnecessary costs. In many cases, the pouch itself isn’t the problem. Leaks usually occur because the packaging wasn’t designed or tested correctly for the product and filling process.

The good news is that most spout pouch failures are preventable. By understanding the common causes, brands can make better packaging decisions before production begins.

1. Weak Spout Welding

The area where the spout is welded to the pouch is one of the most critical points in the entire package. If the weld is not strong enough, it may fail during filling, transportation, or repeated opening and closing by the consumer.

Poor welding can result from incorrect machine settings, inconsistent temperatures, or low-quality manufacturing.
A reliable packaging supplier should test weld strength regularly to ensure every pouch performs under normal handling conditions.

Tip: If your product is packed hot or transported over long distances, ask your supplier about the weld testing procedures used during production.

2. Contamination During Sealing

Even a small amount of product trapped in the sealing area can prevent the pouch from sealing properly.
This is especially common with thicker products such as sauces, honey, or liquid detergents, where splashes may occur during filling.

Keeping the sealing area clean and using the correct filling equipment helps reduce the risk
of weak or incomplete seals.

3. Using the Wrong Laminate

Not all liquid products require the same packaging structure.
For example, acidic beverages, edible oils, or products with a long shelf life may require higher barrier laminates than household cleaning liquids. Choosing an unsuitable material
can affect both the durability of the pouch and the protection of the product inside.

When selecting packaging, consider factors such as:

Product viscosity

Filling temperature

Shelf-life requirements

Storage conditions

Transportation distance

Choosing the correct laminate from the start helps avoid expensive packaging failures later.

4. Cap Leakage

The spout often gets the most attention, but the cap is just as important.

If the cap doesn’t fit correctly or isn’t tightened to the recommended torque, leakage can occur during shipping or after purchase.

Using high-quality caps with consistent manufacturing tolerances helps maintain a secure seal. For certain applications, tamper-evident closures can provide additional protection and consumer confidence.

5. Packaging Isn’t Tested Under Real Conditions

Some packaging performs well in the factory but fails once it enters the supply chain.

Pouches may be exposed to vibration during transport, stacking pressure in warehouses, temperature changes, or accidental drops. Without proper testing, these conditions can
reveal weaknesses that weren’t visible during production.

Many manufacturers carry out quality tests such as:

Leak testing

Seal strength testing

Drop testing

Burst testing

These tests help confirm that the pouch can withstand normal handling before it reaches
the customer.

Prevention Starts Before Production

Preventing leaks isn’t about solving problems after they happen. It’s about choosing the right packaging from the beginning.

Before approving a spout pouch, discuss the following with your packaging supplier:

What product will be packed?

Will it be hot-filled or retort processed?

How long should the shelf life be?

How will the product be transported and stored?

Has the pouch been tested for your application?

The more information your supplier has, the better they can recommend a pouch that suits your product.

Final Thoughts

Most spout pouch leaking problems can be avoided with the right combination of material selection, strong sealing, quality welding, and proper testing.

Rather than focusing only on the cost of the pouch, it’s worth considering how the packaging will perform throughout production, transport, retail, and consumer use. Investing in the right specifications from the beginning can help reduce waste, protect your brand, and ensure your product reaches customers in perfect condition.

If you’re planning a new liquid packaging project, choosing a well-tested Spout Pouch designed for your product is one of the best ways to minimise packaging failures.

Coffee businesses around the world have been focusing on creating a more sustainable, circular economy. They do this by adding value to the products and materials they use. They have also made progress in replacing disposable packaging with “greener” solutions.

We are conscious that single-use packaging endangers the world’s ecosystem. There are ways to decrease the consumption of single-use packaging, however. These include avoiding materials derived from fuel and recycling material that is already in circulation.

If plastic packaging isn’t properly sourced, produced, transported, and discarded, it can be detrimental for the environment. To be truly “green”, packaging must do more than simply be recyclable or reusable – its entire life needs to be sustainable.

Packaging is generally defined as being either rigid or flexible. Flexible packaging includes bags, pouches, and sleeves, whereas rigid packaging includes fixed boxes, pallets, and crates.

While rigid packaging can offer more support and protection, flexible packaging is generally more sustainable. Because fewer raw materials are used to create flexible packaging, it has a lower carbon and water footprint, and ultimately contributes much less to landfill.

Eco-friendly initiatives used to be quite novel in the business world. Several years ago, going green was something that only niche or forward-thinking companies would promote. Today, however, engaging in sustainable practices isn’t something that’s nice to do it’s increasingly becoming the standard.

Numerous groups are urging greater collaboration and eco-friendly measures to protect the environment.

The United Nations notes that in order to maintain current standards of living, the globe would need to have 9.6 billion people by the year 2050, which is almost three planets’ worth of space.

Since there is only one planet where life is possible, everyone must contribute to protecting the environment.

To that end, if you’re an ecommerce store that wants to be more eco-friendly, one important thing you can do is use sustainable packaging. You’re in the business of selling goods to consumers, so you likely use a lot of different materials whenever you pack and ship products.

To help you navigate the ins and outs of sustainable packaging in e-commerce, we’re covering what sustainable packaging is and why companies are switching towards it.

Sustainable packaging refers to packaging materials and designs that are environmentally friendly and minimize the overall impact on the planet. It is a holistic approach that considers the entire lifecycle of a package, from sourcing of materials to production, transportation, use, and disposal or recycling.

Sustainable packaging aims to reduce waste, decrease the use of non-renewable resources, minimize pollution, and conserve biodiversity. This can include using materials that are biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable, designing packaging that uses less material, or implementing closed-loop recycling systems.
